Coventry City Council unveils £300m regeneration plan February 8, 2012

Coventry City Council has unveiled its plan for a £300 million regeneration plan for the centre of the urban district.

Members of the public can now look at a blueprint for the project, which has been developed through a collaboration with the other major landowner Aviva and covers Hertford Street, Barracks Car Park, City Arcade, Shelton Square and Bull Yard.

The scheme was partly inspired by the iconic cross layout of the 1950s Gibson plan for the city and should be flexible enough to accommodate changing consumer demands in the 21st century.

It also reflects the district's heritage and is forward-looking, fitting in with other regenerations taking place, such as in Broadgate and Friargate.

Plans for outline approval have been submitted, detailing ambitions for new retail units, hotels, apartments, a cinema complex and car parking facilities.

"I believe that this is the beginning of one of the most exciting transformations our city has seen in 50 years," cabinet member for city development councillor Linda Bigham said.

Drivers Jonas Deloitte was appointed as the lead development consultant for the project in May 2011.
